On 27 June 2022, the 2022 TM5 host European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO) organised a virtual IT Expert meeting among the TM5 Partners in the framework of the IT Support for Trade Mark Examination Project. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a regular observer at TM5 meetings, also participated in the meeting.
Once again, this recurring event provided a useful platform for Partner Offices to exchange and learn from each other on their recent IT tools and initiatives to support examination. Discussions mainly focused on new technologies utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and blockchain.
Among other things, JPO presented on its image search tool and a recent ‘AI x Trademark: Image Search Competition’, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on intelligent transactions and full lifecycle public services, the EUIPO on its Esearch plus database and image search in the fields of absolute, relative grounds and 6ter database, and also on its IP Register in blockchain. The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) presented on its AI-aided figurative mark search and Vienna classification recommendation service and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on the trade mark search projects ‘Trademark Vision’ and ‘Elasticsearch’, as well as on its ‘Trademarks Virtual Assistant’.
